Set up Larken

  1. Install Larken from the App Store and open it.
  2. Choose your plan: Your own key (connect OpenAI or ElevenLabs; see the setup guide) or Full service.
  3. Add the keyboard: Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Add New Keyboard… › Larken.
  4. Tap Larken in that list and turn on Allow Full Access (needed for dictation).
  5. Allow microphone access when Larken asks.
  6. Open Notes, tap 🌐 to switch to Larken, tap the mic, and say something.

Why does Larken need Full Access?

iOS requires Full Access for a keyboard to talk to its own app, which Larken needs in order to start dictation and receive your text. Without Full Access, the Larken keyboard still works for typing. Larken doesn't collect what you type, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Why does Larken open when I tap the mic?

Apple doesn't let keyboards use the microphone directly, so Larken starts recording in its own app. Tap “◀ [App name]” in the top-left corner to go back, and keep talking. To skip this step next time, turn on Keep mic ready (Larken › Settings › Record): choose 1 minute, 5 minutes (default), or 15 minutes. The orange dot in your status bar shows whenever the microphone is on.

Troubleshooting

  • I can't find the Larken keyboard. Check Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards. Then, in any text field, press and hold 🌐 and choose Larken.
  • The keyboard switched back to the iPhone keyboard. Password fields, phone-number fields, and some apps don't allow third-party keyboards. That's an iOS rule.
  • The mic button says Full Access is needed. Turn on Allow Full Access (see above).
  • Recording didn't start, or stopped early. Check that the microphone is allowed in Settings › Larken. Recording stops after 3 seconds of silence or at your time limit (1, 2, or 5 minutes, in Larken › Settings › Record).
  • No text appeared. Make sure the cursor was still in the same field. If you switched fields, open the Larken keyboard and tap Insert, or copy the text from History.
  • Key errors (not accepted, balance used up, request refused, provider busy): see troubleshooting your key.
  • “Full service allowance used.” Recordings pause until your allowance resets. The app shows when that happens.
  • Apple Watch isn't sending to iPhone. Keep your iPhone nearby and unlocked once, and check that the Larken Watch app is installed (Watch app › Available Apps).
